Study Grades States On Higher Education

Ten States Lose Federal Education Money for Poor Children

Federal money to educate poor children is increasing, but 10 states and more than half of the nation's school districts will see a drop in their share of the dollars in the next school year, according to a report released June 15. Overall, nearly 56 percent of school districts will get less federal money, despite a $647 million increase in the Title I program that allocates money for low-income students.

On the Record: Kansas Budget Director Duane Goossen

One of a handful of holdovers from Kansas Gov. Bill Graves' Republican administration, budget guru Duane Goossen is in charge of managing state fiscal matters for new Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D). State Elections Boost Women Candidates

State primary elections Tuesday gave a big boost to women candidates, raising the possibility Michigan could get its first female governor come November. But voters in at least two states rejected new tax initiatives and the candidates pushing them.

State Health Officials Concerned About Vaccine Shortage

On the surface, a nationwide tetanus and diphtheria vaccine shortage may not seem like such a big deal. How many people will step on a rusty nail this year? Doctors in states such as Wisconsin say the shortage is serious due to flooding in the state and related accidents, but in Kentucky, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington, health experts say it's not yet a problem. But the shortfall is resulting in higher prices for states and potential problems for patients.

State Parks Reeling From Budget Drought

State parks across the country suffered years of cutbacks so states could balance their budgets after the 2001 recession. Now, all but a handful of states are running surpluses, but state parks are still hurting. Park visitors in Kansas find more potholes, less cleanly campground bathrooms and higher admission fees.
