Beshear to Face Williams for Kentucky Governorship
By John Gramlich, Staff Writer
Kentucky Senate President David Williams came out ahead in a three-way Republican primary for governor on Tuesday (May 17), earning the chance to take on Democratic incumbent Steve Beshear in November. Kentucky is one of just four states — along with Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia — that have a gubernatorial election this year.
With 48 percent of the vote, Williams defeated Louisville businessman Phil Moffett and Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw, The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports . The race was closer than expected, with Moffett picking up 35 percent, though turnout was scant.
Williams now turns his attention to Beshear, with whom he has long done battle in his legislative leadership role. Earlier this year, the two men faced off over Medicaid funding in what was widely seen as a proxy fight leading up to the gubernatorial race. In the general election campaign, Williams will likely attempt to tie Beshear to President Obama, The Courier-Journal predicts, noting that Obama "has never been popular in the state."
Williams will be running on the same ticket as Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer, his choice for lieutenant governor. Beshear's running mate will be Jerry Abramson, the former mayor of Louisville.
